How To Effectively Pack Boxes for Moving or Storage?

Packing is the most time-consuming part of a move, and this step must be completed carefully and strategically. Getting all of your belongings packed in boxes is not as easy as some people think, and you cannot just throw items into boxes because this can lead to damage. In order to protect your possessions, you must pack effectively, and the first step is to gather all of the right materials.

Packaging Tools Are Essential

In addition to cardboard boxes, you will also need other packing tools as well. Tape, markers, bubble wrap, packing paper and plastic wrap will all come in handy and having the right materials will help make your moving process easier. When you don’t use the right materials, your items can become damaged and may break during transit. The last thing you want is to open boxes in your new home only to find that your belongings are not in their original condition.

Once you have everything you need, you must then sort your belongings by category and group similar items together. It wouldn’t make sense to pack clothes with bathroom products, for example, and categorizing will make the unpacking process a lot easier.

Heavy & Fragile Items

Professional movers recommend packing the box almost fully, and heavy items must be packed first. Wrap these items with bubble wrap and place them at the bottom of the box, after which you can place lighter-wrapped items on top. Do not overstuff the boxes, and be mindful of weight because boxes will have to be loaded and offloaded, and if they are too heavy, they may drop. If you see that your boxes are not full, add excess moving paper instead of cramming more items to prevent your belongings from breaking during transportation.

Packing fragile items will take longer because they need to be individually wrapped before being placed into boxes. Items like mirrors, glassware, plates and lampshades, for example, will have to be thoroughly wrapped and will have to be placed strategically into boxes.

Once all of your belongings have been packed into boxes, seal them with strong tape. Do this first across the top of the box with flaps and then against the flaps to ensure the box cannot open during transit. Label each box clearly with a permanent marker after taping it and clearly state its contents. This will help movers place the boxes in the right rooms, which will make the process a lot quicker and more efficient.

Packing cannot be left to the last minute, and this is something that needs to be done early on. Packing takes time, and planning is required, and starting early will prevent headaches and stress.
